Parent/Caregiver and Child/ren – Bushcraft & Survival Skills – “Unplugged & Reconnected”

Parent/Caregiver and Child/ren – Bushcraft & Survival Skills – “Unplugged & Reconnected”

WHEN: 1st – 4th August 2024 WHERE: IVO Sunshine Coast

DURATION: 3.5 Days

CHILD AGE: 8 – 16 years

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS EVENT

I understand that not all families look the same and so by popular demand and many requests the parent/caregiver and child/ren event came into conception. As the world becomes more fast-paced and technology comes to the forefront of our everyday lives it feels impossible at times to slow our minds down and find the time to truly connect with our children and share thoughts, feelings, hopes and aspirations as well as be a guiding light in their lives.

THE EVENT

We will essentially cover key bush craft and survival skills while allowing for breakaway sessions, where parents and their child/ren can have time together and return to campsite for more skills building. This is an inclusive event for parents and children, encouraging real time connection through as much hands-on practical tasks as possible, to complete or participate in.

WHO IS IT FOR?

This for Parents/caregivers who want to commit to and build connection with their child/ren in a slightly younger age bracket, while immersed in nature and learning new skills. The event is designed and curated for any skill level, from complete beginners to seasoned campers. I will follow the lead of the group and tailor the experience to suit the skills and experience for each group.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

We will take the time to get to know each other, whilst I share some of the Bushcraft and Survival Skills I learnt during my time with the Military and as survival instructor.

These skills include:

  • Spending time in nature, reading the natural environment and learning about the priorities of survival
  • Water collection, filtering and sterilisation
  • Improvised shelter building
  • Creating fire without modern tools such as matches and lighters
  • What we can and can’t trap, harvest and eat when out bush
  • Implementing rescue plans and emergency scenario challenges
  • Practicing whittling skills, ropes, knots and lashings
  • Navigation at night using stars and by day using a shadow stick

There will also be camp fire cook-ups, marshmallows, conversations and storytelling as well as fun around our campsite.

“I look forward to you joining me around the campfire! “

Rick J Petersen.
